The ActionWorkflow approach to workflow management technology developed by Action Technologies Inc. is a design methodology and associated computer software for the support of work in organizations. The approach is based on theories of communicative activity as language/action, developed in a series of systems for coordination among users of networked computers. The approach is described, an example of its application is given, and the architecture of a workflow management system based on it is given. In addition to the development of computer support systems, the theory and analysis methodology has been used as the basis for consulting about redesign of business processes in a number of organizations.
